The Department of Surgery started
functioning from the foundation day of the college in 1961,
with Prof. Pritam Das, the then Principal as Professor and
Head of the department of Surgery
and Dr B.C Mukurjee as Reader. In 1963, the first batch of
students, one of whom would laterbecome the head of the same
department, reached the clinical teaching stage, at the SRN
Hospital premises. Dr ND Tahiliani MS, FRCS joined as
lecturer and Dr BD Sharma MS,FRCS as Reader in
Surgery .Two other units namely ENT and Orthopedics were
started with newly appointed lecturers, Dr SR Singh MS,DLO,
and Dr R C Gupta MS (Surgery) ,MS (Ortho) .
The first batch of MS (Gen Surgery) post graduate students
got their honors in 1965, and
soon the department acquired its eminence on the map of
Northern India as an institute and
department of quality. In 1967, Prof. Harold Rodgers of
Queen’s College, Belfast came as visiting
Professor, sharing his experiences and contributing to
further development of the department.
Experimental Surgery Research Station was added and by 1975
the department was the only one,
among all medical colleges in U.P to be upgraded and renamed
as Post Graduate department of
Surgery. It was in the same year that Prof. Pritam Das
retired and Prof.Y.P Naithani took over the reins of this
now blossoming department. In this aforesaid period Dr P.K
Basu, Dr C.K Gupta, Dr
SC Agarwal worked for brief periods imbibing the essence of
this premier department, to later
move on to Gorakhpur, Agra and Jhansi as respective heads of
the department of Surgery.
The department expanded further with Dr D K Mittal and Dr A
K Gupta as Reader and Dr
N.K Keswani and Dr N.K Mehdiratta as lecturers.
Dr. R.C Kesarwani as lecturer and Dr J.K Mishra as lecturer
CTVS Surgery and Dr H.Rahman
as pediatric surgeon joined in 1976.This heralded the period
of Superspecialisation in General
Surgery. The department was further consolidated with the
joining of Dr D.R Singh and Dr SC Atri,
as lecturers in Surgery, and Dr Tatsat Mishra as a Plastic
Surgeon.
In terms of Staff and Post graduate admissions, it was the
biggest department of the
college and its progress in surgical education gained from
strength to strength and was admirably complimented by MCI
Inspectors on record, for both under graduate and post
graduate education.
In 1987 the department spread its wings further with the
appointment of 3 lecturers in the Surgical
Superspecialities of Neurosurgery, Urology and
Cardiothoracic Surgery namely Dr S.P.S Chauhan,
Dr S.P Tandon and Dr Shekhar Tandon respectively.
The department was at its peak during this time, under the
able headship of Prof. N.D
Tahiliani. From the period of 1987 till the end of the
century, no further appointments were made
in the department as in other departments and colleges of
the state.
In 2000, the department was given a further boost with the
joining of Dr Vikas Sachdeva
MS, MCh as CTVS Surgeon, Dr Dilip Chaurasia MS MCh as
Urosurgeon.
Dr Nitya Nand Gopal MS,MCh as Neuro Surgeon and Dr Probal
Neogi MS,FRCS and Dr Shabi
Ahmad MS as general Surgeons. Surgical admissions and
operations picked up again with the
addition of newly acquired technology in Endourology,
Endoscopic Neurosurgery, Thoracic Surgery
and Laparoscopic Surgery.
Since then, till present time further additions were made in
the
department with the joining of consultants namely Dr
Sidharth,MS,MCh, Dr V.K Pandey MS, Dr
Mohit Jain MS,MCh,Dr Vaibhav Srivastava, Dr Anil Kr Saroj,
Dr Dinesh Kumar, Dr Jitendra Kumar,
Dr Raj Kumar, Dr Sanjay Singh, Dr Mayank Singh, Dr Rahul
Singh and Dr R.J Siddiqui.
In the last 2 years the department was actively pursuing
National programme of No Scalpal
Vasectomy. The Trauma Centre was started in the SRN campus,
wherein further addition of staff
was done. This fully staffed department has been gaining
strength under the able guidance of
Prof. S P S Chauhan as is evident from the increased patient
turn over and provision of highly
specialized and advanced surgeries on a day to day basis.
