Dr. (Prof.) V.K. Agrawal was the founder head of the department which was established in 1967. It was started in 1967 as a 6 bedded unit at S.R.N. Hospital which was later shifted to the present building of S.N. Children Hospital at Church Lane in 1968. This hospital has now become one of the main tertiary care centres of the province for children and neonates.

At present, it consists of 100 beds with well equipped intensive care unit consisting of Ventilators, Radiant warmers, Incubators, Blood gas analysers, Phototherapy, Twin beam bilimeters, portable USG, X-rays etc. Physiotherapy and other routine laboratory tests are also available inside the hospital. It also has a well equipped operation theatre taking care of emergency and elective Paediatric surgeries.

The department has air-conditioned lecture theatre of 150 seating capacity with modern audio-visual facilities. The department has started Malnutrition Treatment Unit in collaboration with UNICEF where apart from medical treatment; children are getting free nutrition rich food from the hospital.
