Department of Community MeDiCiNe

The department of Social and Preventive medicine of this college was established in the year 1962, with Prof. Tarapada Bhadury as Head of the department. After a short span of 10 months, he was succeeded by Prof. S. C. Bagchi, who occupied the chair of the Head of department from the year 1963 to 1974.

During this period the department grew systematically with rapid strides. Prof. S. C. Banerji joined this department in the year 1974 and continued till 1979. Three Primary Health Centers, Chaka, Jasra and Shankargarh were attached with the department for practical field training and teaching of undergraduates, M.D. Post graduates and medical interns.
Subsequently from the year 1979, the department was headed by Prof. B. Raj who was succeeded by Prof. Gyanendra Singh in 1989 and he remained at the helm of affairs till July 2000. Under his leadership the department made great strides in academics, research and other field activities. Prof S B Dabral headed the department till 2005 and thereafter the present head Prof S. Dwivedi is occupying the chair. The rural field training center, Chaka, has been shifted to the Community development Block and Jasra has acquired a building complex of its own. Urban Health Center has been established in the premises of S.R.N Hospital. The department served as a regional I.C.D.S Training Center.
Three Faculty- two M.O.H- Cum- Lecturer and one of Reader in Community medicine were added in the year 1980 under the ROME Scheme. Rural and Urban Health Centers:- Rural Health Training Center (RHTC) Jasra has a building Complex of its own, consisting of an administrative block, 16- room intern’s hostel, residential flats for mOH- cum- Lecturer and para-medical staff and a garage. A 30-bedded Upgraded Primary Health Center is also attached with RHTC, Jasra for teaching and training of undergraduate, M.D. Post-graduates and medical interns in Community Health. The U.H.C. runs a regular immunization clinic, Well-baby clinic and nutrition clinic. It utilizes surrounding slum areas as well as slum Anganwadis of the Urban ICdS Project as its field practice area.
