The Department was created as a separate department in M.l.N. Medical College, Allahabad on the 24th of April, 1981 when Biochemistry was introduced as a separate subject in the M.B.B.S. first Professional Curriculum as per M.C.I. directives with a meager strength of two teaching and three non-teaching staff.

The department besides academics has been active in the field of research. Since 1984 it has 3 ICMR, 2 BRC and three CST projects to its credit. The Department has contributed towards research in Oxidative Stress and the role of antioxidants during aging and degenerative diseases for the past ten years, Serum levels of anti-oxidant markers, Vitamins A, e & C, Heavy Metal toxicity and anti-oxidant supplementations. Till date the department has 100 published papers to its credit.
