The department of Anesthesiology was established in 1963 under the headship of Dr N. R Gupta, D.A. (London) who joined as lecturer. Initially the department functioned under department of Surgery and got independent existence in 1972.

Dr. T.R Mishra, M.D took the chair of first professor and head in 1974.

(Late) Dr. G. N. Singh and Dr. A. K. Jauhari were the first M.S. and D.A respectively who passed out from the department in 1970.
